Listening Skill
Listening is an essential part of the communication
process. Because much of what students know is
acquired through listening, it is essential that
students have opportunities to practise the
behaviours of effe
ctive listeners.
Listening is more than hearing. Comprehending
spoken language involves process-oriented thinking
skills and strategies. Because listening involves the
use of language and thought, the ability to listen
effectively develops as students’ language abilities
develop and mature.
Developing effective listening abilities cannot be left
to chance. Active listening experiences should be
structured into daily English language arts activities.
Students learn to value listening when it is given a
prominent role in the English language arts
classroom and when it is meaningfully integrated
with their viewing, reading, representing, speaking,
and writing experiences.
Middle Level teachers should remember that they
play an important role in modelling active listening
throughout the day.
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process.
Listening is key to all effective communication.
Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily
misunderstood. As a result, communication breaks down and the sender of
the message can easily become frustrated or irritated.
